Channeling Erik

July22nd

Here I sit in the Alpine Tundra wearing a ratty old housecoat with pockets full of kleenex. Where else but Norway can you have a freaking head cold in July? Ugh.As you know, Erik always loved hanging out here in this little cabin in the middle of nowhere, so it didn’t surprise me a bit when he delivered a few pranks. At around 4:00 AM two nights in a row, he delivered a variety of smells. The first was of freshly baked bread. Hmm, actually, that was probably Andy. The next was the heavy smell of cigarette smoke. It was like someone was lying beside me puffing a stream of smoke in my face!  That was definitely Erik. He smoked like a chimney. Then this morning, as I lie awake contemplating getting up, my left leg started tingling from my hip to my toes and became covered with goosebumps. The tingling crescendoed almost to the point of alarm, like, “Is this what someone feels before they spontaneously combust?” type of alarm. I could see Erik is my mind’s eye, grinning widely. I knew it was all his not so subtle suggestion that I get my lazy ass out of bed and make waffles. I smiled back, then rolled over and went back to sleep.

Now, on the subject of political ire: since we’re getting nowhere and the circling is making me dizzy, I hereby suggest we respectfully disagree, embrace our differences, and move on. I apologize, not for what I stand for, but for any misunderstandings I may have been responsible for. I also pronounce this a blog that must remain FREE of personal insults. Logical discussion and heated debates will always be welcome, because this is how we learn. But name calling is from this point forward a big no-no. Know that I love you all.

My son, Lukas, turned me on to the coolest app ever! It’s Bejeweled 3 and if you go to the Zen category, you can play the game while aligning your chakras, picking subliminal affirmations, listening to binaural beats, mantras, doing meditative breathing, entering delta, alpha, or theta state, increasing your lucid dreaming and much more. WARNING: You will be addicted.

Feel better soon Elisa! I hate summertime colds. Someone may have already asked you this and my apologies if so but have you had a chance to check around the outside of the cabin for the mystery sign or message that was referenced a while back in another post? Sorry I can’t remember the exact details.

Hey Ty, bring us up to date! What are you up to?

  • http://channelingerik Pat

    Hey Elisa,

Wise comment about politics and attacks. We should all just calm down and get out of the primitive brain and into the logical brain.

I did want to address something though that highlights the problem we all have with politics and our logical brain. We first of all “take sides” and usually with information that may not all be true or backed by correct information. This leads us on all kinds of emotional bunny trails.

Case in point…someone mentioned that Social Security is an entitlement program. SS is not an entitlement program. It is an insurance program. In other words we all pay into it but only some of us will use it. Think of all the people who die before they are eligible. It is the same thing as car insurance. We are all required to pay into it and if we have an accident, then we get paid. Do we begrudge anyone who collects on a car accident?

This is why Democrats are so adamant against “means testing” because it changes SS from an insurance program to an entitlement program because then some people who pay into it would not get a benefit when they retire because they make too much money. It would be like asking everyone to buy car insurance but then not get paid when a rich person has an accident because they can afford to pay it themselves. That is an entitlement program.

The reason SS is approaching some tough fiscal restraint is not because people who retire pay in 25% of what they collect. It’s because SS is a “pay-as-you-go” program, which means that today’s workers are paying for the benefits to today’s beneficiaries through their payroll taxes. So it’s not a savings program where you get paid out of what you put in.

But here’s the problem, in 1940, there were 42 workers per retiree. In 1950, the ratio was 16-to-1. Today, there are 3.3 workers per retiree, and within 40 years, it’s projected that there will be just two workers per retiree. So we have the deadly combination of decreasing birth rate and increasing life span. All projecting future problems with funding.

Now can we talk about how to fix this instead of pointing fingers and hurling insults? This is just one example of how operating from the logical brain could really aid discussion and debate.

    Feel better soon, Elisa!

      Thanks Lynette. Miss you!

I heard about the explosion in Oslo today with 2 dead. I wonder what is behind it?

    • http://drmedhus.com Elisa

Seven dead. They think it’s terrorists, possibly Al Quaida. And there was a big scale shooting of some sort on a Norwegian island where 700 of the young labor movement was meeting, and I’m not sure about the details. It’s so sad though.

  • Su

Just heard about the bombs in Oslo, glad you and family are safe in your cabin Elisa. My thoughts and prayers are with family of those hurt. Thanks for videos by the way. xx

Elisa, I hope you feel better soon. I’m soooo glad you and the family are away from the violence in Oslo. The world is a challenging place, but then, that’s its function.

Get well soon Elisa. So sorry to hear about what has happened in Norway. Keep safe.

  • Steve

How ironic that you are in Norway when Norway is the news – more lessons for us all, I suppose.

I have a summer cold too. I am getting better but man, what a bummer! Hope you feel better, Elisa.

  • Ty

I’ve been ok, Elisa. Kinda down a bit lately, just wondering what’s the point of it all, you know? I check the blog everyday – haven’t missed one entry. You are such a soldier; how do you keep it all together and stay so on top of everything? I need some of that. I’ve just been feeling like a dark storm cloud is constantly following me around. My wife went to a Reiki session on Tuesday and she had a good experience – EXCEPT the lady told her someone in her life is being very negative and dealing with inner termoil… I blamed it on our dog (lol). Anywho, sorry for the stream of consiousness post. I made an appointment to see Jamie in August. I’ll be sure to let you know how if goes. Thanks for being here, and stay strong – we love you.

    • http://drmedhus.com Elisa

Ty, you should call me when I get home. Do you have my phone numbers? If not, email me at emedhus@gmail.com. I’m there for you, Sweetie. I’m a good listener. And I don’t keep it all together all the time! YOU are the soldier in all this. Where do you live? I know you’ve told me but I can’t remember.

  • Susan

Just heard about the attack on the Radio…:-/ Glad you all are safe :-)
I hope you have a relaxing weekend to heal that cold…

    Light and Love to Everyone…..Susanxoxo

    Hi Elisa,
The past couple of posts have been interesting, just sad about all the insults and F bombs, but I’m sure everyone will move on. I was actually wondering where we can purchase pendulums and any other devices you guys learned about in Atlanta, any suggestions would be appreciated. Enjoy the rest of your trip.

    Pat,

Here’s the definition of an entitlement program, from the Auburn University “A Glossary of Political Economy Terms” website:

    Entitlement program

The kind of government program that provides individuals with personal financial benefits (or sometimes special government-provided goods or services) to which an indefinite (but usually rather large) number of potential beneficiaries have a legal right (enforceable in court, if necessary) whenever they meet eligibility conditions that are specified by the standing law that authorizes the program. The beneficiaries of entitlement programs are normally individual citizens or residents, but sometimes organizations such as business corporations, local governments, or even political parties may have similar special “entitlements” under certain programs. The most important examples of entitlement programs at the federal level in the United States would include Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, most Veterans’ Administration programs, federal employee and military retirement plans, unemployment compensation, food stamps, and agricultural price support programs.

    http://www.auburn.edu/~johnspm/gloss/entitlement_program

So, yes, SS is an entitlement program by the accepted definition of that term. You were right about some people being misinformed, of course, just not about who that was. Best not to point fingers without checking the facts you claim to know. Google is your friend.

And you are partially right that the problem with SS is the diminishing number of workers supporting retirees. But this is of course a function of the actual payouts to retirees also, which have increased all out of proportion to what was paid into the system. SS is not a true pay-as-you-go insurance system by any means. For decades, workers have paid far more in SS taxes than has been payed out. The SS “surplus” is held in the form of special bonds, bought by the treasury department to finance the general federal debt. This surplus totals several trillion dollars, and is just now dipping into the red, meaning that now SS has to draw some of its payments from cashing out these bonds, meaning current workers paying out to cover that debt. It’s a real mess, an accounting nightmare, and a demographic swing that will hurt for the next generation as Baby Boomers start to retire.

But no question about it, current retirees are getting far more than they paid into the system, and have been since it started. That can’t go on forever, of course, unless population and GDP continues to grow at the same pace, which it is not. Thank God for immigrants, who make up for the slowdown in birth rates and who will pay into the system for decades before collecting. Remember that the next time someone bitches about immigration hurting the country.

The only true “solution” to this problem is increased worker productivity through higher technology and economic efficiencies. Already that has wrought miracles for many decades and postponed this crisis. The current depression has increased overall productivity, but reduced overall production due to so many workers being out of work and thus unproductive and not paying taxes. THis is also in part a function of so much of our capital and productive energy being sucked up by the finance industry, rather than actual production of goods and services. Finance has recently sucked out 40% of all corporate profits, which does tell you who the real bloodsuckers are in our country. (Hint: it’s not the people living in the projects, whatever their race might be).

thanx for the post i read all the political post and i was thinking that our spirituality here together should be based on light love and trust to give and get equally and in my opinion the political views of each of us should never be a barrier or a form of seperation in us as a group ,political views shouldnt be anymore a topic then food preference ,style, business etc none of these issues should be of any concern for we are together for light love and all the other good things there are out there for us but never divided in that sense. sorry if i am rambling but i just didnt feel any form of critizism when i was reading elisas or others political views b/c i know those are not things that count for us as a group/family..love to you all.

      Thanks, Darling!

Not Al Quaida at all, but a blonde Norwegian with extreme right leanings. At the moment, 84 dead at the youth camp, and counting.

The island shooting is a Christian fanatic, but the bombing in Oslo they’re not sure about. I bet it was the same guy.

People expect hand outs with no responsibility that is what got our country ware we are we need to improve schools stick to laws and the constitution and shut our borders and make English the only language in our schools and punishments that make people not want to go to jail and work our inmates to grow and make there meals cut out cable tv and make stealing robbery punishments unbearable we had a 12 year old slashed 20 tires in my town and he got anger classes and no fines or community service

    Thanks,
    mls

    • http://drmedhus.com Elisa

I don’t know but I’ll ask. I think the guy is obviously mentally ill.

  • http://channelingerik Pat

    Hey Conrad,

I know SS is defined as an entitlement program. One hears it every day in the news. My point was that the workings of SS is more along the lines of an insurance program. This was an attempt to describe the problem so we possibly could see past the “entitlement” definition in which the word itself turns a lot of people off.

That was my point to begin with…”entitlement” is a very emotion driven word. Sometimes it helps to see past that to come up with solutions.

I’m sorry if I hurt your feelings.

  • mlslowik

Another solution to the economic mess is to hire the unemployed to work at available jobs. What jobs? Cleaning up the planet. Who pays for these jobs? Taxes on anyone who is polluting the planet.

    • http://drmedhus.com Elisa

      I like it!
